UW-Parkside Solar ArrayThe University of Wisconsin-Parkside's newest solar installation has proven to be a success in its first year of operation. The 2.1-megawatt solar array has reduced campus electrical consumption by approximately 26% since it began operating in December 2023, putting it on track to meet projected returns through utility savings.

Built on a former parking lot on the east side of campus, the installation showcases innovative technology through its bifacial panels mounted on tracking arrays. These dual-sided panels follow the sun's movement throughout the day and capture light reflected from the ground, maximizing energy generation efficiency. The project was funded through the State Building Program as a major investment in sustainable infrastructure.

UW-Parkside Solar ArrayThe new array complements existing renewable infrastructure at UW-Parkside, which includes a 10-acre, 2.25-megawatt solar farm operated by We Energies through their "Solar Now" program. All energy generated by the new installation is used directly on campus, supporting the university's broader sustainability initiatives.

In addition to energy generation, UW-Parkside continues to improve energy efficiency. In 2024, the campus completed 10 major efficiency upgrade projects, including lighting improvements in parking lots and enhancements to heating and cooling systems. These projects are estimated to reduce energy use equivalent to that of 59 homes, further strengthening the university's commitment to sustainable operations.

The solar array's success has garnered recognition, earning a spot on the 2023 RENEW Wisconsin Clean Energy Honor Roll. It aligns with Wisconsin's Clean Energy Plan while providing valuable educational opportunities for students pursuing careers in the expanding field of diversified energy production. Through these installations and efficiency improvements, UW-Parkside is not only advancing its sustainability goals but also preparing the next generation of energy professionals.
