Shimadzu Hosts "Hemp Help" Seminar at UW-Parkside March 16
SOMERS - A free educational seminar titled, “Hemp Help: Growing your Canna Business in Wisconsin,” presented by Shimadzu Corporation will be held at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday, March 16, beginning at 9 a.m. in the Student Center. The seminar is an opportunity for the community to learn about hemp growing and processing in Wisconsin and Shimadzu’s advancements in hemp testing.
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) industrial hemp research pilot program is permitted under terms of the 2014 federal farm bill. The research program requires growers and processors to obtain one-time licenses, register each year that they intend to plant and process industrial hemp, pass background checks, and pay fees to participate in the program.
The “Hemp Help” seminar includes an array of guest speakers who will discuss the challenges of growing hemp, as well as complying with production, processing and testing regulations in Wisconsin. Tours of the new UW-Parkside Natural Products Testing Lab will be available.
Dr. Ehab Abourashed, a graduate of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Cairo University, opens the seminar with the “Health Benefits of Hemp, Marijuana, CBD and THC - A Reality Check.”
Sara Johnson of Ballew Farm in Kentucky and Joseph W. Hickey, founder and executive director of the Kentucky Hemp Growers Cooperative, will present “Farmers Share Challenges of Growing and Harvesting Hemp.”
DATCP representatives will provide updates on hemp growing and processing in Wisconsin.
