DIRECTOR'S NOTES

Cody Estle

Greetings!

When I was approached to direct Hand to God for the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, I was immediately excited by the challenge this play presents. I had seen the show during its successful 2015 Broadway run, and later at Victory Gardens Theatre in Chicago. Hand to God is wild, funny, and deeply real.

The play delves into the complexities of religion and faith, exploring how spirituality can both comfort and provoke conflict. At its heart, it examines the struggle for self-identity through the tumultuous relationship between Jason and his puppet, Tyrone. Their journey highlights the tension between personal desires and societal expectations—a universal experience. After all, we all have those voices in our heads: the good voice and the bad voice. The constant battle between right and wrong is something we all face, each in our own way. Some of us handle it better than others.

At its core, Hand to God asks a difficult question: What is the nature of evil? Is it an intrinsic part of human nature, or is it shaped by both external and internal influences? And at the end of the day, it’s a comedy!

The experience of working on this production has been incredibly rewarding. What has truly been the greatest gift, however, has been collaborating with the talented students of Parkside. They are smart, dedicated, and hard-working. As someone who makes theatre professionally, I can say that the passion and skill I’ve seen here gives me great optimism for the future of American theatre.

Enjoy the show!
