DIRECTOR'S NOTES
Carrie the Musical is based on Stephen King’s 1974 horror novel by the same name.
The original 1988 Broadway production was notoriously unsuccessful but was re-written and remounted in 2012 to positive reviews. It has become a favorite among college productions for its gothic and social themes, its challenging and beautiful score, and its loyal cult following.
In the age of frequent school shootings, it struck has me that the novel was written decades before Columbine - before deadly results from relentless bullying was a common experience in our country. Stephen King had conjured a shocking, gothic, harrowing tale - a perfect storm of teenage torment, fundamentalist religious sexism, and supernatural powers. This 1974 fable of girl-on-girl torture and revenge now lives through a different lens, an age when our young people practice active shooter drills from the age of 6.
I hope, in and amongst the enjoyment of a good horror story at Halloween time, we can hang onto the lyrical question echoing through the show - “What Does it Cost to Be Kind?”
