DIRECTOR'S NOTES
Most likely written toward the end of 1598, first performed early in 1599, and first printed in the First Folio of 1623, As You Like It sits perfectly between William Shakespeare’s comedies of the 1590s and his romances of the early 1600s. The play contains many themes: Romantic Love, Gender, Country versus Court, Time, and Redemption. All these themes (and there are more besides) grow out of a single act that occurs before the play even begins, the act of insurrection. Duke Frederick has ascended to power by overthrowing the benevolent rule of his brother, the former Duke Ferdinand who, along with many of his former allies, have fled the dangers of the new court for the questionable safety of the forest of Arden.
My personal experiences with this play are several. As an aspiring graduate student, I auditioned for multiple theatre programs with Jacques' "A Fool in the Forest" speech. Professionally, I performed in the 2002 production at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, directed by David Bell. Academically, I served as text coach for a production at the College of Lake County, and personally, I participated (this time in the role of Touchstone) in an international Zoom reading of the play, alongside (virtually) a wonderful cast of fellow Shakespeare's Globe, London acting alumni during the early days of the pandemic. In all my experiences with this play it has always been the themes of Time and Redemption that have most affected me.
The chaos introduced into the world of the play by Frederick's coup sets off a series of chain events that test protagonist and antagonist alike. Everything is turned upside down; brother betrays brother, courtiers are forced to adapt to the country while country folk must deal with the encroachment of courtiers onto their land and into their lives, and gender roles are turned upside down as the lady Rosalind disguises herself as young master Ganymede to avoid the new duke's wrath. Throughout all this tumult, there is a growing awareness that Time is passing, always passing, and that though we all begin as infants "mewling and puking in the nurse's arms", the "last scene of all, /That ends this strange eventful history, /Is second childishness and mere oblivion." No character in this play, no matter how vile their behavior nor how ill-advised their choices, is left without the possibility of forgiveness, so long as they are willing to face their flaws and seek redemption. A simple idea that remains incredibly relevant as we move through our own more modern brand of chaos.
Thanks for coming to play with us.
