The PARC no longer has tutors in the Language Lab, but the Lab is still open and available!
This lab is open daily Monday through Friday. The Modern Languages Department and English Department invite students to drop by this computer lab to work on class assignments or see a language tutor. Please contact the Modern Languages Department for more information about the Fall 2016 tutoring schedule.
The Parkside Academic Resource Center (PARC) offers free academic support in a variety of undergraduate subjects each fall and spring semester. The main PARC location (which houses the Math Center, the Writing Center, and subject tutoring) opens week 2 of the semester. The satellite labs for drop-in Chemistry and Anatomy & Physiology also begin regular shifts week 2. Supplemental Instruction (SI) uses in-class surveys the first week to set a schedule of review sessions that start week 3 of the semester.
Student tutors and SI Leaders are subject area experts who have successfully completed the course, usually with the same professor. They are able to review course material, assist with preparing for exams, guide discussion, and provide tips on study strategies in the content area. Each PARC staff member has at least a 3.0 overall GPA and typically earned at least a 3.3 for every general subject course which she/he/zhe tutors.
PARC services in the main location: Walk-in
math tutoring is available whenever the Center is open. The Writing
Center accepts walk-ins but encourages appointments (which can be made at least
24 hours in advance). Assistance with other subjects varies by semester and is
by appointment. You can request an appointment by speaking with the PARC
staff in person or by phone at 262-595-2044.
Contact information: Peruse our information on each resource below, or visit the main PARC location in Wyllie D180 (across from the Advising and Career Center) for more information about any of our services and to schedule an appointment. Our front desk staff can also assist you by phone at 262-595-2044. If you'd like to use the online appointment scheduler, go to tutortrac.uwp.edu from an on-campus computer.
The PARC has a skilled team of math tutors on duty for walk-in help. No appointment is necessary, as we strive to have math tutors for a variety of course levels on duty during every hour that the PARC is open. While students work on homework individually or in groups, tutors roam between tables answering questions about methods and helping students check their own answers.
Don't be fooled! Our writing center isn't only for English majors and writers-by-trade. PARC writing tutors are willing and able to assist you on any written work, from lab reports to poetry, from brainstorming to polishing. The Writing Center is a great resource because it provides a one-on-one interaction with a skilled writing tutor. A writing tutor's goal is not only to help with your assignment, but also to guide you to be a better writer. To make sure someone will be available, students can make appointments with a writing tutor 24 hours in advance; however, writing tutors are on duty every hour we are open, and if they are free, are available to take walk-ins.
The main PARC location offers 1-hour appointments (for 1-3 students) for a variety of courses. We are always looking to add more classes to our list. Please contact us for more information about individual courses. Subject areas our current tutors have specialties in:
Accounting * Art and Art History * Anthropology * Bioscience and Biology * Chemistry * Computer Science * Economics *English Conversation * Geography * Graphic Design * Philosophy * Physics * Stats
Supplemental Instruction is available to help students succeed in challenging courses. SI review sessions are led by a student leader who has already successfully completed the class. The SI Leader attends the lecture, along with currently registered students, and then designs study sessions based on the material presented. These groups vary each semester, so check with the Center to see what's currently available View the current supplemental instruction roster here.
At the PARC, we understand the importance of commanding the spoken language in addition to your academic written language. Parkside proudly hosts a sizable international student population each year. To support this community, the PARC has begun English conversation appointments for non-native English language speakers who want practice in spoken English. Our tutors address everything from slang to how to converse with a professor.
