Locating Books
Reference books are excellent places to start research. The following are books that provide background information, definitions, and lists of potential sources for further research.

Atlas of Crime: Mapping the Criminal Landscape (REF HV 6783 A85 2000) looks at how geography affects criminal activity. This book is the result of a multi-disciplinary approach that includes work from criminology, psychology, sociology, education, and criminal justice. Included are maps and statistical information as well as bibliographies providing sources for further research.

Criminal Justice (REF KF 9214.5 C75 2006) is a three volume work covering many facets of the criminal justice discipline. See the full record in the library catalog for a link to the work's table of contents.

Encyclopedia of American Prisons (REF HV 9741 S54 2003) provides entries on all aspects of incarceration in the United States. Included are essays describing historical events and people as well as contemporary topics.

Encyclopedia of Crime and Justice (REF HV 6017 E52 2002) provides background information on all areas of criminal justice research. This work contains more than 250 essays written by scholars and experts in the field. Each essay includes a list of sources for further research.

Encyclopedia of Criminology and Deviant Behavior (REF HV 6017 E53 2001) is a four volume set that contains scholarly essays on deviant and criminal behavior including Juvenile Delinquency, Sexual Deviance, Self Destructive Behavior and an historical and theoretical overview of deviant behavior. The essays cover approximately 500 topics.

Encyclopedia of Juvenile Justice (REF HV 9104 E58 2003) provides background essays on all aspects of juvenile justice including historical works, current perspectives, people, and ideas. Essays are written by criminal justice scholars and practitioners.

Encyclopedia of Law Enforcement (REF HV 7921 E53 2005) covers aspects of criminal justice relating to the field of law enforcement. The work is three volumes broken into the following categories: state and local law enforcement, federal law enforcement, and international law enforcement.

You may also want to try using other specialized encyclopedias for topic ideas and background information. Use the library catalog and try a search (use the QuickLimits to limit to Reference Materials) including the word encyclopedia and terms relating to your topic. For example:

encyclopedia and "political science"

Locating other books in this library : Use the Library Catalog to find books owned by the UWP library. Use one of the catalog's keyword search options. Then look at the subject headings used in the records you retrieve. Is there one that describes what you're looking for? If so, click on it to find other books on your topic..

Books in other libraries : To find books and other materials from public, school, and academic libraries across Wisconsin, search BadgerCat. To locate materials in libraries worldwide, try a search in WorldCat.

UW System Search: UW System Search/Universal Borrowing (UB) allows you make arrangements yourself to borrow materials from other UW libraries. All of the 13 UW libraries participate in this program. UB is built on the idea that the UW System libraries together are now one virtual library.

Using the UWP library catalog, you can simultaneously search other UW libraries to determine if the item you want is available. Simply select the "Multi Library Search" link at the top of our library's catalog and conduct your search. If the item is available from another UW library, you can complete an online request form, which will be transmitted directly to the owning library. The owning library will retrieve the material and send it to the UWP library. A courier service runs between the UW libraries five days a week and delivers the requested materials. You can use the UB service to request books and A/V materials, however, requests for periodical articles should still go through the regular interlibrary loan process.

Locating Journal Articles
One of the best places to find current material on any given subject, including criminal justice, is in scholarly or peer reviewed journals. Peer reviewed journals are different than popular magazines in a number of ways. In particular peer reviewed journals:
  • discuss research in detail
  • include a substantial bibliography
  • are written for, and by, scholars (usually by college professors)
  • are "peer reviewed" (approved by experts in the field)

Step 1: Use an index to find citations to journal articles on your topic.

The periodical indexes listed below will help you find citations to journal articles and other publications. You may search for articles by subject headings, keywords, or by author. Note that many citations are NOT full-text. Therefore, you'll need to go on to step 2, below, once you have selected some citations.

Criminal Justice Abstracts contains indexes and summaries of international journal articles, books, and governmental and non-governmental reports on a wide range of topics in criminal justice including crime trends, crime prevention and deterrence, juvenile delinquency, juvenile justice, police, courts, punishment and sentencing.

SocINDEX with Full Text contains full text for 289 "core" coverage journals dating back to 1895, and 75 "priority" coverage journals. This database also includes full text for 547 books and monographs, and full text for 6,711 conference papers.

Worldwide Political Science Abstracts is particularly useful for those researching international criminal justice issues.

PsycInfo contains many citations for articles relating to theoretical aspects of Criminal Justice.

Academic Search Premier covers all academic disciplines including criminal justice.

Step 2: Now that you have a citation to an article, does the Library own the journal?

After you've found a citation to a journal article in which you're interested, click the FindIt! button to see if the library has the journal in either print or electronic form.

Conversely, you can check the UWP Periodicals List to see if the Library subscribes to the journal in either print or electronic format.
