The Industry


Encyclopedia of American Industries
(2 vols.) (REF HC 102 .E53 1994) provides an introduction to the structure, history, and current conditions of American industries. Arranged by Standard Industrial Codes (SIC), which can help you find further information about the industry. SIC codes have been replaced with North American Industry Classification System (NAISC). The NAISC manual and a NAISC/SIC conversion table are available on the web.

Manufacturing Worldwide (REF HD9720.4 M26 1999) Regional production totals and leading producers worldwide for 500 manufactured products. Manufacturing industry statistics for 176 countries.

Standard and Poor's Industry Surveys (3 vols.)(REF HC 106.6 S74) provide extensive essays that include historical perspective, current status, and forecasts for U. S. industries. Standard and Poor's web site has many features including articles, news, analysis, and credit ratings. Requires free registration

Value Line Investment Survey (part of the Value Line Research Center) is one of the most widely used independent investment information services in the world. Its up-to-date issues are a comprehensive reference that has useful information for virtually every investor. In breadth of coverage it is encyclopedic, covering some 1,700 equity issues. Every week, about 135 stocks in seven or eight industries are covered.

The Company


Hoover's Manuals
are available through Company Financial section of the Business file in Lexis-Nexis (Academic). Select Hoover's Company Reports at the "Source" pull down menu. Covers companies listed on the New York and American stock exchanges, giving company histories and detailed descriptions of each company's financial status.

International Directory of Company Histories ( REF HD2721 .I63) This 41 volume set contains entries for over 3100 private, nonprofit, and state-owned international companies that have a minimum of $25 million in annual sales. Entries consist of 3-4 page essays. Each volume includes cumulative indexes to both companies and industries.

Moody's Manuals (REF HG 4961) Several manuals cover companies listed on the New York and American stock exchanges, giving company histories and detailed descriptions of each company's financial status. Financial profiles and information by industry are also supplied.

Ward's Business Directory of Private and Public Companies (8 vols) (REF HF5035 .F5 2001) Lists approximately 120,000 companies in alphabetic, geographic, and industry arrangements. Ranks companies by sales within their SIC code. An SIC code index allows you to identify competitors.

Annual Reports and 10K Reports

These are now often available on the company's home page, or you may call the company. The 10-K reports which companies submit to the Securities and Exchange Commission are more explanatory than annual reports. They are contained in this source

Consumer USA (REF HC101.C744) temporarily on Reserve has an overview of economic, social, and consumer trends in the US as well as demographic data and statistics on consumer market information up to 2002 and forecasting through 2007.

Directory of Corporate Affiliations (REF HG4057 .A219)
Once you identify competing brands for your product, use this to identify the companies producing the brands.

Market Share Reporter (REF HF5410 .M35 2003)
An annual compilation of reported market share data on companies, products, and services. Shows market share by company within product areas for American companies. For foreign industry information consult World Market Share Reporter (HD2757.15 .W67 1997/98). For the most current statistics use Stat USA's Globus & National Trade Data Bank.

Ebsco's Academic Search Elite covers a wide range of academic areas, including design and related fields. It features the full-text for over 1,000 journals. Restrict your search to scholarly journals by selecting the Advanced Search option and limiting your search to Peer-reviewed journals.

ABI Inform Global Indexes and abstracts over 1300 scholarly, trade and popular business journals. Full text articles are available for over 600 journals titles. Coverage: 1971 to present.

ABI Inform Trade and Industry Indexes and abstracts over 700 trade journals covering every major industry, including finance, insurance, transportation, construction, etc. Coverage varies.

Academic (Lexis-Nexis) Full text coverage of 6000 English language sources, including newsletters, magazines, trade journals, wire services, broadcast transcripts (AP, New York Times, CNN), international news sources, business directories, SEC documents, corporate profiles, statutes, federal and state case law, law reviews and state legal materials. Coverage varies.

Business Full Text 3000 international English-language business magazines covering accounting, finance, management and small business. Coverage: 1982-present; updated monthly.

Business Source Elite Provides fulltext for nearly 930 journals covering business, management, economics, finance. Coverage: 1990 - present.

Proquest Newspapers Coverage of 556 worldwide newspapers. It has 300 full text papers covered in ProQuest Newstand, including access to the Wall Street Journal.

Wisconsin Newsstand. ProQuest. has selected indexing and full text for major Wisconsin daily papers including the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Useful indexes for Statistics:

Lexis Nexis Statistical enables easy access to statistics produced by the U.S. government, major international intergovernmental organizations, professional and trade organizations, commercial publishers, independent research organizations, state government agencies, and universities. Coverage: 1973 - present. Fulltext 1998 - present (some back to 1995)

STAT-USA A service of the U.S. Department of Commerce. State of the Nation provides current and historical economic and financial releases and economic data. Globus Business Opportunities provides current and historical trade-related releases, international market research, trade opportunities and country anaylsis TheNational Trade Data Bank provides access to country commercial guides, market research reports and U.S. import and export statistics.

Step 2: Now that you have a citation to an article, does the Library own the journal?

First, check the Library Catalog, to see if the Library subscribes to the journal and has the issue you need. Search the catalog by Journal Title. Next, check the UWP Periodicals List for articles that are available full-text, often through databases such as Ebsco's Academic Search.

Citing sources

When preparing a project in art or design, follow the recommendation of your instructor when you cite the sources you have used. Instructors may recommend the format styles described in these publications and Web sites.

The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Assocation (APA) provides examples of the American Psychological Association (APA) citation style. Consult the most recent edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, located at the Reference Desk (REF DESK BF76.7 P83 2001).
